The Woodlands, TX –On Saturday, September 8, at 10 a.m., Sadler Clinic will sponsor a presentation on colon cancer, entitled “A Cancer of Ill Repute.” MD-Anderson-trained Oncologist Dr. Sandeep Kodityal is the featured speaker. The presentation will take place in Future Court at The Woodlands Mall (first level across from JC Penney).
Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most prevalent cancer in the U.S., but one of the least discussed in public forums. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 112,340 new cases of colon cancer (55,290 men and 57,050 women) and 41,420 new cases of rectal cancer (23,840 men and 17,580 women) will be diagnosed in 2007. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and is expected to cause about 52,180 deaths (26,000 men and 26,180 women) during 2007 alone.
“Few cancers are as unglamorous as colon cancer,” noted Dr. Kodityal, “but few cancers are as preventable as this one. Taking advantage of colonoscopies and other screening methods recommended by the American Cancer Society can make the difference between having a deadly disease and a long, healthy life.”
Dr. Kodityal, also known as “Dr. Kodi,” will discuss the range of colon cancer risk factors that everyone should take into consideration when looking at their own and their families’ health, as well as which diagnostic tests are appropriate. “Some people may need to schedule a colonscopy with more frequency than others, particularly if someone in their family has already had colon cancer. Other factors to be aware of,” he adds, “are the presence of polyps and inflammatory bowel disease.”
Dr. Kodi will also discuss short-term and long-term treatment options, some of which have been developed recently and represent great improvements over available therapies in the past. “The current standard of care in colorectal cancer today is not ‘your grandfather’s chemotherapy,’” he remarked. “We now have state-of-the-art adjuvant chemotherapy, which produces fewer side effects.”
Dr. Kodityal will also discuss things that everyone can do to decrease the risk of colon cancer, including changes in diet and exercise habits.
Dr. Kodi earned his BA degree from Duke University and his MD degree from the Texas Tech School of Medicine in Lubbock, where he graduated in the top quartile in his class. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine. He completed additional training in gastrointestinal medical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center and completed a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine.
