Diabetes Update from Sadler Clinic’s Dr. Subramanian

At The Woodlands Mall on July 7, 2007

The Woodlands, TX – On Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m., Sadler Clinic will sponsor a presentation entitled “Diabetes Update.” Endocrinologist Vidhya Subramanian, M.D. is the featured speaker. The presentation will take place in Future Court at The Woodlands Mall (first level across from JC Penney).

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. Approximately one-third of people with diabetes are unaware that they have it. One reason for this may be that the symptoms can seem harmless. The following symptoms may indicate diabetes or pre-diabetes: frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, or blurry vision. If untreated, diabetes can cause blindness, amputations, nerve damage, kidney failure, heart disease and stroke.

It is unknown what causes Type I diabetes, the condition in which the body fails to produce insulin. Type I is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Some factors that play a role in developing Type II diabetes have been identified. Type II diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Other factors, such as being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle, are also known to increase the risk for developing Type II diabetes. However, just 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, coupled with a 5-10% reduction in body weight, can produce a significant reduction in risk for diabetes.

Taking the appropriate steps to prevent or manage diabetes is vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Subramanian will discuss the common symptoms, tests to diagnose diabetes, prevention and treatment options. She will also touch on diabetes associated health risks and the importance to keep blood glucose well controlled. She hopes that the presentation will increase awareness regarding diabetes, so that people at risk can take steps towards prevention and treatment.

Dr. Subramanian earned her undergraduate degree from Lokmanya Tilak Medical College, in Mumbai, India and her MD degree from University of Bombay, also in Mumbai. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Lincoln Medical Center in New York. She also completed a fellowship in Endocrinology at the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, and later served there as an assistant professor of medicine and staff endocrinologist. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.
