Program Provides Information on Avoiding Diabetes-Related Complications

At The Woodlands Mall on October 7, 2006

The Woodlands, TX -- Diabetes is one diagnosis than can lead to many others, if a diabetic does not know how to manage the risks associated with this disease. On Saturday, October 7th, Sadler Clinic will sponsor a program entitled “Diabetes: Know Your Risks to Avoid Complications.” The program will take place at 10 a.m. in the Future Court at The Woodlands Mall (first level across from JC Penney).

Diabetes is often associated with an increased risk for serious, sometimes life-threatening complications. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetics are two to four times more likely to experience a stroke than non-diabetics are. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure and the leading cause of new cases of blindness in persons aged 20 to 74. Approximately 60 to 70 percent of diabetics experience some form of nerve impairment or damage. Diabetes also poses certain risks and complications during pregnancy. Certain populations are at especially high levels of risk for kidney problems related to diabetes, including African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans. However, with timely diagnosis and proper medical management, many complications related to or caused by diabetes can be avoided.

“Our program this month will include a panel of experts,” explained Terry Fisher, Executive Director of Sadler Clinic, “so we can provide a broad spectrum of information about diabetes risks and complications.”

The six panelists include: Ves Caperton, MD (Family Medicine), Scott DeWitz, MD (Family Medicine), Shari Fox, MD (Endocrinology), Laura Fernandes, MD (Interventional Cardiology), Ferenc Markos, MD (Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Mark Wilkerson, M.D. (Ophthalmology)

Controlling blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and monitoring and controlling cholesterol levels are of major importance to anyone with diabetes. Proper skin care and frequent eye exams are also important in lowering risks for diabetes-related complications. The panel will discuss these and other ways for patients with diabetes to maintain long-term health.
