Family Practitioner, Kyle Scarborough, M.D. to Give Advice On Creating a Child-Safe Home

At The Woodlands Mall on June 3, 2006

The Woodlands, TX -- On Saturday, June 3, at 10 a.m., Sadler Clinic will sponsor a presentation entitled “There’s a child in my house!” given by family practitioner Dr. Kyle Scarborough. The program, described as “an essential guide to household safety and first aid for preschool children,” will take place in Future Court at The Woodlands Mall (first level across from JC Penney).

Unintentional injury—not disease—is the leading cause of death among children under 14 years of age, according to the National Safety Council. Preschoolers are at especially high risk, because they are at a pre-reading and pre-judgement stage. Is your home safe for your child or grandchild? You won’t know for sure until you survey your home from a child’s point of view.

Blind cords, candles, buckets filled with water, and stairways can all be sources of life-threatening injuries for small children. Dr Scarborough will discuss the many safety “checkpoints” parents and grandparents should examine to keep their homes safe for children and will also provide information on first-aid treatment for injuries. The causes and consequences of injuries vary considerably by age and developmental level, reflecting differences in a child's ability to understand what is in the environment around them.

“It’s not a new saying, but it’s still a true one,” remarks Dr. Scarborough, “that the time to be prepared is before an injury or accident occurs. No one plans for these events, but we should plan to be prepared for them. Knowing appropriate first-aid techniques for small children not only can save lives, but it also puts parents’ and caregivers’ minds at ease on a daily basis, because they know they will be prepared if an accident occurs. Whether for a cut, spider bite, allergic reaction, or a fall, rapid and appropriate first-aid treatment can make all the difference.” Knowing how to create a safe home environment and knowing first-aid techniques is the ideal combination for any concerned parent or grandparent with small children.

Dr. Scarborough earned his MD degree from the University Of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed his residency at Houston’s Memorial Southwest Hospital. As a father and family practitioner, Dr. Scarborough’s expertise and interest in children’s safety is one of the hallmarks of his medical practice.
