The Woodlands, TX – More than 70 million Americans suffer from some kind of coronary heart disease, and up to half a million American die from heart disease every year, according to the American Heart Association’s 2006 statistical update. Family Medicine Specialist Dr. Brent Allmon will share ways to reduce the risk of heart disease on Saturday, February 4, at 10 a.m. in the Future Court at The Woodlands Mall.
The latest annual figures from the National Cancer Institute reveal that more than half a million Americans died from cancer in 2004. Timely cancer screenings, however, can prevent up to 35 percent of these cancer deaths. That’s as many as 175,000 lives saved. Screening procedures exist for at least 15 different types of cancer. These screenings are designed to detect pre-cancerous conditions and, in some cases, can detect cancer in its earliest stages, when it is most easily controlled or cured. As research continues, each year provides new information on how and when cancer screenings can help patients. Dr. Walker will provide recently updated information to that effect.
“One of the most important things to remember about cancer screenings,” commented Dr. Walker, “is that these tests can be administered to persons before any symptoms of illness occur. A screening is primarily a pre-diagnostic tool that tells us if a patient has conditions that could make him or her susceptible to cancer. If you can find these conditions even before someone has symptoms, that is the best possible scenario.
“In its earliest stages or pre-onset stages, cancer is both silent and stealthy. Screenings put strong advantage points on the side of the patient,” he added.
Dr. Walker earned his MD degree from the University Of Texas School Of Medicine at San Antonio and completed his internship and residency training at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine.
