The Woodlands, TX – More than 70 million Americans suffer from some kind of coronary heart disease, and up to half a million American die from heart disease every year, according to the American Heart Association’s 2006 statistical update. Family Medicine Specialist Dr. Brent Allmon will share ways to reduce the risk of heart disease on Saturday, February 4, at 10 a.m. in the Future Court at The Woodlands Mall.
One of the key factors in reducing the risk for heart disease is high blood pressure, a condition that affects more than 65 million Americans, making them vulnerable to heart attacks and strokes. Monitoring blood pressure is especially important, because an increase in blood pressure frequently produces no symptoms or warning signs.
“When it comes to blood pressure, what you don’t know certainly can hurt you,” explains Dr. Allmon. “It can trigger serious illnesses that cause significant and permanent damage to the body. Your family doctor can help you with the three most important steps to healthy blood pressure: detection, prevention, and control. In addition to blood pressure medications, there are many things patients can do on their own, as part of their daily lifestyle, to reduce or control high blood pressure.”
Many of the other risk factors for heart disease can also easily go unnoticed, such as high cholesterol, a gradual decline in exercise and activity, or a gradual increase in weight. It’s important to realistically assess the risk factors in one’s life and lifestyle in order to prevent heart disease. Dr. Allmon’s presentation will provide a solid introduction to cardiac health self-assessment.
Dr. Allmon earned his MD degree from the University of Texas School of Medicine at Houston and completed his residency training at the University of Missouri at Columbia, followed by a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. He is board-certified in family practice and certified in advanced cardiac life support.
