Urologist Ajay Kwatra to Discuss Nocturia

At The Woodlands Mall on January 7, 2006

The Woodlands, TX -- On Saturday, January 7, at 10 a.m. in Future Court at The Woodlands Mall, Dr. Ajay Kwatra will offer a free presentation on nocturia. If a person gets up to urinate two or more times per night on a regular basis, he or she could have nocturia. Patients with severe nocturia may get up five or six times during the night to go to the bathroom. Symptoms of nocturia include excessive urination, frequent urination, urinary urgency, or reduced urine. Nocturia may also result when a person's "body clock" allows for a daytime urination pattern to occur at night.

Nocturia represents much more than just the inconvenience of interrupted sleep. It affects up to 65 percent of adults aged 55 to 84, according to the National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep in America Poll, and can result in major, chronic sleep deprivation that contributes to lowered work productivity and increased automobile accidents and injuries from falls. The condition can also be a sign of other health problems, including urinary tract infection, diabetes, prostate enlargement or tumors, or bladder prolapse. It is also common in people with heart failure, liver failure, or poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Dr. Kwatra’s program will discuss how to identify when a person is suffering from nocturia and the steps that can be taken to diagnose, treat, and develop coping strategies for this condition.

“Many people think of nocturia as a nuisance or a necessary evil they have to endure as they grow older,” says Kwatra, “but it’s important for people to realize that this is a medical condition that needs to be treated appropriately and that quality of life can improve greatly with medical treatment. There is now a wide range of options for treating nocturia, from changing liquid consumption habits to cystometry that measures pressure within the bladder and recently developed medications.”

Dr. Kwatra is a board-certified urologist who earned his MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed residencies in urology and general surgery at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.

This program is the first in a year-long series of informational programs presented as part of Sadler Clinic’s Partnership for Health Series. For more information, contact Cyndi Alvarado at 936.760.7860 or calvarado@sadler.com.
