The Woodlands, TX -- On Saturday, July 9, at 10 a.m., Sadler Clinic will sponsor a free presentation on Cholesterol Concerns by Endocrinologist Dr. Shari C. Fox in Future Court at The Woodlands Mall (1st level across from JC Penney). Dr. Fox will answer key questions about cholesterol, including: What is normal cholesterol? What can you do to control your cholesterol levels? At what level should you be concerned about your cholesterol and take some kind of action?
These are important questions for everyone, but especially for the nearly 40 million Americans who have high cholesterol and the additional 107 million Americans whose cholesterol is considered to be borderline, edging into the higher-risk category.
Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in the lipids, or fats, in the bloodstream, and in the body's cells. It's an important part of a healthy body because it's used to form cell membranes, some hormones, and is needed for other functions. But a high level of cholesterol in the blood -- hypercholesterolemia -- is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack. There are several kinds of cholesterol, and it's important to know which form of cholesterol has the greatest impact on heart health. Dr. Fox will discuss the differences between the various forms of cholesterol, including LDL and HDL cholesterol.
"Cholesterol can be both good and bad, so it's important to learn what cholesterol is, how it affects your health and how to manage your blood cholesterol levels," explained Dr. Fox. "Cholesterol is one risk factor for heart disease, heart attack and stroke that can be changed and controlled by not only medications, but also by making healthier lifestyle choices. The key to making those healthier choices is to have dependable information to base your choices on."
Dr. Fox earned her MD degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and her Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology.
