The Woodlands, TX -- On Saturday, June 4, Sadler Clinic will hold a Skin Care Health Fair at The Woodlands Mall. The fair will begin with a presentation by Dermatologist, Dr. Joel Hyman. Dr. Hyman will discuss the full range of effects that sun exposure can have on skin, from cosmetic issues to pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions. After the presentation, Dr. Hyman will provide free cancer screenings on face and outer extremities for those who are interested.
Following Dr. Hyman's presentation, the Sadler Clinic Dermatology Department will provide additional screening services and information during the rest of the Skin Care Health Fair. The presentation and fair will take place at The Woodlands Mall in Future Court, on the first level across from J.C. Penney from 10:00 a.m. - 12 Noon.
"Having access to good information and frequent screenings are the key to overall skin health and skin cancer prevention," remarked Hyman. "According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 1 million cases of basal cell or squamous cell cancer are diagnosed annually. In the case of melanoma, early detection is critical. When it comes to skin cancer, a brief examination by a skilled dermatologist truly can be life-saving."
The three major types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas can cause substantial illness and, if untreated, can cause considerable damage and disfigurement. If detected and treated early, however, these carcinomas have a cure rate of more than 90 percent. Malignant melanoma causes more than 75 percent of all deaths from skin cancer. This disease can spread to other organs, most commonly the lungs and liver. Malignant melanoma diagnosed at an early stage usually can be cured, but melanoma diagnosed at a late stage is more likely to spread and cause death.
"And," Hyman added, "as we approach the hottest months of the year in Texas, it's the right time to stop and remember the basic guidelines for skin protection during the summer months."
Dr. Hyman earned his MD degree from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio and is a graduate of Texas A&M University. He is board-certified in Dermatology.
